This blog is the virtual arm of a large project I’m working on entitiled Sense(Less), which is the thesis project for my Master of Fine Arts degree in creative nonfiction writing from Columbia University.

Here I hope to tackle some questions that have been buzzing around in my brain over the last few years. Educated as a scientist (I hold a BS in Geology from Syracuse University with a minor in Biology) and an environmental writer by training, I am curious about the connection between technology and our five senses.

Are we pushing past physical evolution by augmenting our brains and bodies with human-built apparatus? What is our technology doing to our humanness? Are we understanding the natural world better than our ancestors through use of satellite mapping, meteorological tracking, and the like, or are we distancing ourselves from our environments with our gadgets, believing we know more through information overload while we are ignoring ancient sensory cues?
